I am a writer and nature photographer, living in a small rural village in the Samford Valley. Here on Australia’s east coast, surrounded by the Samford State Forest and enclosed by four rugged mountains, I enjoy exploring new and interesting ways to engage with the beauty of the natural world.
My poetry, written in the Japanese verse forms of haiku, tanka and haibun, is published in Canada, the United States by Red Moon Press, the MET Press and Kei Books. My writings also appear in anthologies and literary journals: Atlas Poetica, Take Five, Gusts, and Paper Wasp. In 2010 Blemish Books (Canberra) published a suite of twenty poems in Triptych Poets volume 1. My historical novels and short stories are available in the Amazon kindle store.
My husband and I often roam around Australia as we visit the outback and cities of interest. Our favourite destinations also include the islands scattered throughout the Pacific Ocean. With my notebook, pen and camera at hand, I’ve enjoyed researching the stories about these places, and photographing the amazing scenery, stunning flowers and foliage, found in these unique parts of our world. This blog―Nature as Art and Inspiration―has recently been awarded membership in the top 100 nature writing blogs. It is a work in progress that has developed through my love of nature, writing, and travel.
Do visit again as I will add new postings monthly.
Interesting. Thank you for including me in this. I do love Australia even though I may not come back because of distance. However, in 4 years my step-daughter is going back and wants us to come. if my husband is doing ok we may come, depending on health. Lois
I missed last week, Mary, but that made this viewing even more special as there were a number of new things to read and to look at.Love the photography and the poetry.See you again soon. Margie
You’ve chosen an excellent title for your blog, and I’m pleased to see that you’re as inspired by the subject as I am.
The only time I was in Australia, seven years ago, I went for a walk one afternoon in Wollongong and was dismayed to find some flowering lantana, a plant that’s native here in Texas. It was a reminder that we all deal with alien invasives, alas.

your family name sounds French… any connection with “old Europe”?… 🙂
my very best and tons of inspiration… friendly thoughts, Mélanie – Toulouse, France
Melanie,
My father’s family line originated in Quebec in the 1800s and several members migrated into the US via Vermont and finally Minnesota where I grew up. We made visits on many occasions to French Canada. I even took my Australian husband and our two boys back to Quebec for a visit, to see where my roots had originated.
I strongly believe that roots and origins are extremely important for our own identity… your ancestors went to Québec from Europe, I presume… 🙂

I do hope you’ve also made it to Europe… sunny greetings and respectful regards, Mélanie
quelle beauty in your words and pictures 🙂
